STEAM Curriculum

In our buildings, we utilize a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculum that nurtures critical thinking, provides students opportunities to examine the world around them, establishes a strong foundation for future success.

In Our Classrooms

For several weeks at a time, our students engage in learning activities that focus on a specific, real-world concept (i.e. simple machines). Throughout this unit of study, we read and write about the concept and create works of art to communicate an idea or story that connects to the concept. We also use the concept to practice hands-on math skills like counting, finding patterns, measuring and making comparisons. We explore scientific skills by asking why and how things work, utilize the engineering process to collaboratively solve a problem and use tools of technology to test our theories.

In Our Special Areas

Our students participate in a rotating schedule of special area classes, with a different class offered each day. These classes provide unique opportunities for students to explore, discover and develop new skills. They also enhance our interdisciplinary approach by thoughtfully connecting learning experiences to the central concepts explored in our STEAM units of study, creating a cohesive and engaging educational experience.

Our students gain an understanding of foundational art concepts, experiment with various mediums, learn about artists in our community, historic artists and critique and works of art.

Students engage in the engineering process to address real-world challenges, such as programming a robot to transport food scraps to a compost bin. They collaborate to analyze the problem, design and implement a solution, test their approach and share their findings with others.

Our students explore foundational music concepts using their voices and a variety of musical instruments and explore music and dance from around the world.
