Learning Spaces
Our early childhood environment is thoughtfully designed to be both beautiful and stimulating, offering a rich array of hands-on materials and carefully crafted learning spaces. These spaces are specifically tailored to nurture curiosity, independence and a lifelong love of learning in our youngest learners.
Classrooms
Whitney Young has five pre-K classrooms (maximum of 20 students in each room) and five Kindergarten classrooms (maximum of 24 students in each room). Each of our 10 classrooms has a licensed teacher and certified assistant to facilitate instruction and support student learning. Additionally, our classrooms are filled with collaborative learning centers, technology tools to enhance learning, various classroom materials and manipulatives to extend learning.
Outdoor Learning Lab
Our outdoor learning lab provides the perfect setting for young learners to connect with nature and engage in hands-on exploration. This dynamic space includes vibrant garden beds, our beloved annual pumpkin patch (a favorite of the neighborhood groundhog), open grassy areas shaded by trees, a playful mud kitchen and an outdoor stage designed for dramatic play.
STEAM Lab
Our STEAM Lab is a vibrant and inspiring space, filled with a wide range of tools and resources that encourage creativity and exploration. Each week, during our STEAM Innovation special area class, students work together to develop collaborative plans to solve real-world problems, conduct hands-on experiments with various technology tools and explore different STEAM careers.
Art Studio
We absolutely love creating art using a wide variety of mediums, from painting and drawing to sculpture and beyond! Our art studio is a vibrant space, filled with an extensive collection of tools, materials and resources that encourages self-expression. It's a place where students have the freedom to explore different artistic techniques, experiment with new ideas and bring their beautiful masterpieces to life, all while developing their artistic skills and imagination.
Media Center
We wholeheartedly embrace our love of reading in this special and welcoming space! In this cozy area, students listen to stories that aim to spark imaginations, engage in meaningful discussions about the connections we make with the text and reflect on the themes and lessons within. Afterward, we take time to select books that we can take home to enjoy with our families to promote a shared reading experience.
Outdoor Playgrounds and STEAM Studio
Our classes rotate through five outdoor playground spaces during recess to engage in various forms of play and learn new activities! Students climb on jungle gyms, play school, ride bikes, try the hula hoop, use sidewalk chalk, play soccer, enjoy the swing together, etc. Our STEAM Studio houses many of our supplies for our outdoor playground activities!
